Act quickly: The sooner you treat a stain, the greater your chances of success. Don’t wait too long before taking action.
Dab, don’t rub: Use a clean, white cloth or kitchen paper to gently dab the stain. Do not rub, as this may push the stain deeper into the fibers.
Work from the outside in: Start with the edges of the stain and gradually work toward the center to prevent the stain from spreading.
Use lukewarm water: In many cases, lukewarm water is enough to remove most stains. Add a few drops of mild liquid soap if necessary.
Carpet cleaning product: If water is not enough, consider using a carpet cleaning product that is appropriate for the type of rug you have. Follow the instructions on the package.
Vinegar solution: For common stains, such as wine or coffee, you can use a solution of one part white vinegar and three parts water. Dab the stain gently and rinse thoroughly with water.
Test in a less visible area: Before using a cleaner on the entire rug, test it in a less visible area to make sure it does not affect the color or texture.
Do not use heat: Avoid using hot water or steam, as this can set some stains permanently.
Do not use abrasives: Avoid using abrasive cleaners, hard brushes or scouring pads, as these can damage the rug’s fibers.
